The Kitchener–Waterloo Symphony (KWS) is a professional Canadian orchestra based in the twin cities of Kitchener and Waterloo, Ontario, with its main performance home at Centre In The Square in Kitchener. Founded in 1945, the ensemble has long served as a central pillar of the region’s classical music scene, presenting orchestral concerts, educational programming, and community outreach that connect audiences of all ages with symphonic music. Over its history, the orchestra has grown into a full-time professional ensemble of musicians under contract, performing a wide-ranging repertoire that includes traditional classical works, contemporary compositions, and film and multimedia programs. The symphony has worked with a variety of guest conductors and artists, and its current leadership includes conductor Andrei Feher. In recent years, the KWS has also navigated significant financial and organizational challenges, including a bankruptcy filing in 2023 that led to a temporary suspension of activities, followed by ongoing efforts toward rebuilding and revival supported by community fundraising and renewed programming. Despite these setbacks, the orchestra continues to play an important cultural role in the Waterloo Region, with ongoing performances and a focus on re-establishing its presence as a leading Canadian symphonic institution.
