Hiyam Mahrat is a Syrian-Canadian theatre artist, performer, and arts administrator based in the Waterloo Region of Ontario whose practice spans acting, community-engaged theatre, and cultural programming. Born and raised in the United Arab Emirates after being raised within a Syrian family background, she trained in performing arts before relocating to Canada in 2018, where she became active in independent and intercultural theatre work. Her creative focus often explores themes of identity, migration, memory, and cultural displacement, frequently integrating personal narrative and collective storytelling into stage-based performance. Mahrat has appeared in a range of Ontario theatre productions, including ensemble and character-driven works such as After the Trojan Women, as well as projects developed through regional theatre companies and community arts organizations. Alongside her performance work, she serves in arts leadership and production roles, including as General Manager of MT Space, where she supports the development of intercultural performance projects and collaborative artistic initiatives. Her work also extends into interdisciplinary and participatory formats, sometimes incorporating food, memory, and storytelling as performance elements. Through both her artistic and administrative roles, Mahrat contributes to shaping inclusive, community-oriented theatre practice within Canada’s contemporary performing arts landscape.
