Hailing from Guelph, Animal Boy has rapidly emerged as one of Southern Ontario’s most kinetic underground acts, blending the nervous urgency of post-punk with sun-bleached surf riffs and hook-driven indie rock. Formed in 2019 by four self-described “anxious twenty-somethings,” the band built its reputation through sweaty club shows and emotionally candid songwriting that pairs jittery guitar lines with lyrics exploring isolation, mental health, and the strange comedy of modern adulthood. Their sound—often compared to artists like Car Seat Headrest and IDLES—moves between manic, dance-floor-ready bursts of distortion and unexpectedly melodic passages that highlight their pop instincts. Early releases such as the 2019 debut I’m Having a Bad Dream, Baby and the 2023 album My Love Is A Terror established them in Canada’s indie circuit, while the 2024 EP CURSE and the 2026 album Bodies sharpened their songwriting into a tighter, more explosive form. Having shared stages with acts like Born Ruffians and MONOWHALES and appeared at events such as Canadian Music Week and Riverfest Elora, Animal Boy continues to cultivate a growing fanbase drawn to their raw honesty, relentless energy, and the cathartic release that defines their live performances.
